The art and science of fibre-making

article
Spinning methods employed in the industrial production of man-made fibres are discussed and presented schematically in this paper. In order to study fibre-making on a reduced scale, the Central Laboratory T.N.O. has assembled in its Spinning Department a variety of equipment for small-scale spinning, partly of its own design. Thus first evaluations of the fibre-forming properties of new and modified polymers can be made, and the effect of new additives or pigments upon classical fibre raw materials studied. To produce fibres with unusual properties it was sometimes necessary to resort to an unconventional spinning technique, details of which remain as yet undisclosed. More fundamental studies at the Department deal with the influence of individual operating variables of a spinning process upon the characteristics of the fibres prepared.
