The influence of stress and deformation on the structure of the cotton fiber
article
The influence of torsion and stress on the structural elements of Bobshaw and Deltapine cotton was im·estigatecl. Slip phenomena between growth layers were noted; in particular, that between the wi nding layer and the outer secondary growth layers seems to be important. Changes in the fiber clue to torsion and longitudinal stress are discussed. Treatment of the fibers with dimethylol ethylene urea or melamine formaldehyde was found to have a distinct influence on the torsion behav ior of the fiber. The usefulness of special optical techniques, particularly near-dark field, fluorescence dichroism, and ion etching is discu sec!. The ion etching method can be successfully used to locate resin or cross-links in the cotton fiber.
