Zzp'ers en werknemers: ongelijkheid in kwaliteit van werk [Self-employed and employees: Inequality in job quality]

article
In this article differences in job quality between the self-employed without staff and employees are examined. Data from the Netherlands Survey of the Self-employed and the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey conducted by TNO and Statistics Netherlands were used. Job quality was measured using the OECD framework, consisting of three dimensions: earnings quality, labor market security and the quality of the working environment. In terms of earnings quality, the self-employed earn less than employees, in particular the self-employed without staff who sell products, like farmers and shopkeepers. For labor market security, the self-employed without staff report more job insecurity in comparison with employees, although they also value the aspect of job insecurity less than employees. The experienced quality of the working environment is more favorable for the self-employed without staff. Compared to employees, the self-employed report more autonomy, more task variety and less workload. In conclusion, job quality differs between the self-employed and employees depending on the dimension of job quality.
