Safety evaluation of yeast grown on hydrocarbons. I: one-year feeding study in rats with yeast grown on gas oil

article
Yeast grown on hydrocarbons according to the gas-oil process was fed to rats at dietary levels of 10, 20 or 30% for 1 yr. Two control diets were used, one being similar to the yeast diets but containing soyabean-oil meal instead of yeast and the other being the institute's stock diet. The yeast diets had no effect on mortality, general condition or behaviour of the animals. Growth on the yeast diets was slightly superior to that on the soya control diet and similar to that on the stock diet. Haematological values were not affected, apart from a slight transient increase in the white blood-cell count at the 30% yeast level. Liver and kidney function tests showed no untoward effects. There were no significant changes in the weight of the major organs nor in the gross and histological appearance of these or any of the other organs examined. The present study failed therefore to reveal any deleterious effects of feeding yeast grown on gas oil to rats at dietary levels up to 30% for 1 yr.
