In the existing Netherlands code NEN 1070: "Prevention of sound nuisance in dwellings", the quality of floors with respect to impact sound is expressed by the use of an index for impact sound insulation I_co. A comparable method is used in several countries. In the course of time, however, some doubt arose as to whether this I_co really leads to the right rank order of floors with respect to impact sound insulation and especially with respect to the sound of footsteps. Several investigators work on this problem. This paper describes a few enquiries in flats with solid floors. Also it is shown that the introduction of a "footstep machine" is not such a simple solution of the problem as it seems to be.
