Towards protective MOFs: post-synthetic modification of MIL-101 with oxime groups and their interactions with toxic chemicals

other
In an attempt to broaden the scope of protective MOFs towards toxic compounds, we decided to introduce a reactive (nucleophilic) functionality in MIL101 by post-synthesis modification 1,2. This functionality would complement already existing adsorptive properties with an ability to capture or degrade a wide range of electrophilic compounds that include CWAs and many TICs, figure 1 (side). This approach was chosen because several research groups demonstrated that MOFs have potential in different aspects of physical protection (respiratory protection, clothing) against chemical warfare agents (CWA) and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) 3–6. However, the development of a MOF that is effectively covering a broad range of relevant TICs / CWAs is difficult to achieve because of the great range of physico-chemical properties associated with TICs and CWA..
