Information extraction from airborne cameras

conference paper
In this paper we evaluate the added value of image interpretation techniques for EO sensors mounted on a UAV for operators in an operational setting. We start with evaluating the support by technology for strategic and tactical purposes in a real-time scenario. We discuss different variations regarding users, platforms and sensors, communication, processing and information prioritization. In the second part of the paper we focus on the added value of processing. We present two image processing methods which can be used to assist the operators in their task. The first method is the detection of humans in the imagery. This helps the operator to focus only on imagery in which persons are visible, which may largely reduce the amount of data in cases where only a few persons are present. The second method is the detection of human activity. This enables the operator to only watch the imagery with certain activities in it.
