Three routes for the production of ß’-Si3Al3O3N5 are optimized: reaction sintering, reaction hot-pressing and sintering of sialon powder prepared by carbothermal reaction of kaolin. The influence of the process parameters during carbothermal production is studied: two reaction mechanisms are distinguished and contradicting reports on the influence of the pellet diameter are explained by the introduction of a critical pellet diameter above which pore diffusion becomes rate determining. The influence of the production route on the room temperature properties appeared to be small.
