The principles, possibilities and limitations of several acoustic and opto-acoustic techniques for non-destmctive evaluation (NDE) of technical ceramics have been evaluated, with the aid of example experiments. Main subjects were the inspection of
(sintered) structural ceramics, bonded ceramics and ceramic coatings. Finally, a comprehensive literature study, encompassing also non-acoustic techniques, gives a more broad insight into the NDE of ceramics.
