Actieve vakanties in extreme klimaatomstandigheden [Active holidays under extreme climatic conditions]
article
Holidays abroad are often accompanied by a change in thermal environment. In extreme climatic conditions, thermal regulation may become problematic. During strenuous exercise in high ambient temperatures with high relative humidity, strong solar radiation and absence of wind, the human body may be unable to transfer sufficient amounts of body heat to its surroundings. If the exercise is not stopped in time, this can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Poor acclimatization and taking insufficient amounts of fluid increases the risk. Activities in the extreme cold can lead to hypothermia or peripheral cold injury. Hypothermia occurs during prolonged exposure to extreme cold or wet environ-ments in which the clothing provides insufficient isolation. Frostbite is the most common cold-related injury during holidays. It can easily go unnoticed for too long and lead to permanent damage.
