Determinanten van duurzame sportbeoefening bij deelnemers aan bedrijfssport [Determinants of long-term sport participation among company sport participants]

Background and goal: Most company sport (CS) participants quit during or after the program has ended. What are the determinants of long term sport participation among CS participants? Methods: Five semi-structured focus groups with CS participants and six interviews with CS coordinators in three Dutch companies about attending CS training sessions, individual training, reasons for quitting or continuing sports activities after the CS program has ended, company characteristics, implementation of CS, communication, characteristics of CS participants. Results: Reasons for long term participation in the CS program: 1. Intrinsic motivation, 2. Realization of expectations, 3. Goal setting, 4. Experiencing positive feelings during and after training sessions, 5. Social support, 6. Individual attention, 7. Sense of duty towards employer. Reasons for continuing sport participation after the CS program has ended: 1. Increased self-efficacy with regard to behavioral maintenance, 2. New challenges due to newly acquired knowledge and skills, 3. Realization of expectations, 4. Motivation to preserve realized outcomes, 5. Participation in sport activities with others, 6. Having found a sport that is fun, affordable, feasible and brings about positive feelings. Discussion and conclusion: This study yielded several determinants of long term sport participation that were translated into recommendations to improve CS programs.
