article
Introduction: The main aim of the current project was to improve the task of Preventive Child Healthcare (PCH) in identifying health problems in children aged 5-6 and 10-11 years. This was achieved by developing a standardized questionnaire as part of the preventive health examinations and by investigating the usability of this questionnaire. Method: A systematic approach was used to develop a standardized questionnaire, e.g. the use of an assessment framework and an expert group. Next, the usability of the standardized questionnaire has been investigated among parents and PCH professionals; the answers of 793 parents on the questionnaire were analyzed. Furthermore 50 parents and 9 PCH professionals were interviewed about the usability of the questionnaires. Results: The usability study showed that the majority of the parents of children aged 5-6 and 10-11 years completed all questions in the questionnaire, respectively 68% and 71%. Especially the Dutch parents filled out the complete questionnaire (compared to immigrant parents). Most parents and PCH professionals rated the usability of the questionnaire as positive. Conclusion: The results of the usability study show that the standardized questionnaire can be used in current PCH practice. We recommend validation research in order to assess whether the questionnaire actually improves the identification of health problems by PCH.
