Versatile high pressure CO2 capture test facility for solvent development: set-up for gaining accurate knowledge of solvent systems

article
Solvent based technology is the state of the art method for the removal of CO2 from natural gas or from shifted syn gas (pre-combustion CO2-capture). In this typical upgrading technology, CO2 is removed from the gas mixture by absorption using physical or reactive solvents. There is an increasing trend towards bringing natural gas fields containing high amounts of CO2 into production. Based on this, more research is done to developing improved solvent systems, capable of absorbing more CO2 per litre of absorbent (i.e. high load solvents). An additional driver for the development of high load solvents is the need for lowering energy consumption for the regeneration of the absorption solvent. Next to that, the production of LNG requires that the treated natural gas contains less than 50 ppmv of CO2. Therefore, there is a need for solvents with a high capacity and still suitable for deep removal of CO2.
