Controlled sonar exposure experiments on cetaceans (abstract)
conference paper
In mitigating the risk of sonar operations, the behavioural response of cetaceans is one of the
major knowledge gaps that needs to be addressed. Within the 3S-project a number of controlled
exposure experiments have been conducted in Norwegian waters with a realistic sonar source
from 2006 until 2013. In total the following six target species have been addressed: killer, longfinned
pilot, sperm, humpback, minke and northern bottlenose whales. Responses from
controlled and repeated exposure runs have been recorded with acoustic and visual observations,
as well as data collected with electronic tags on the target animal. So far, the first dose-response
curves, as well as an overview of scored severity of response have been revealed. In this paper,
an overview will be presented of the approach for the study, the results so far as well as the
current status of ongoing analysis.
