Beamsteering of laser generated ultrasound
conference paper
In the inspection of materials, contactless generation of ultrasound by laser irradiation has a growing interest. The thermo elastic source directivity is completely different from other well known sources. A serious handicap in the application of laser generation is the inability to control the ultrasonic beamwidth and beamdirec tion. In this paper techniques will be presented, which control the beam directivity. Results of experiments with a fiber-optic phased array for beam steering will be presented. Beam characteristics as a function of the optical illumination pattern on the surface of the material to be inspected will be discussed.
