ECO-driving met behulp van serious gaming en social media (fase 1)
report
This report describes Phase 1 of an EL&I co-financing project in which research is carried out for influencing behavior of car-drivers in order to achieve reduction of CO2 emissions. It is investigated how the use of Serious Games and Social Media can influence the driver behaviour.
The research fits well with the government program "Schoon en Zuinig" which aims at a sharp reduction target of greenhouse gas emissions: between 1990 and 2020, CO2 emissions - at European level – have to be reduced by 30%.
The Netherlands wants to act as a good example in the field of climate policy and is with this objective in line with other countries with ambitious climate targets.
The investigation also joins the TNO Strategic Plan in reducing harmful emissions in the atmosphere: "Active in reducing CO2".
----
In this phase of the research project first an inventory and deepening is made of running initiatives in the areas related to the research (serious gaming, social media use, data collection in the car, initiatives in the field of eco-driving, and developments in the field of Human Machine Interface).
Then a serious game design has been chosen where the driver is confronted with real-time challenges in order to drive economically. The challenges take place against recorded tracks from previous trips or real-time against a car-driver who drives the same route. Special attention is given to ensuring the safety of drivers during the serious gaming stage. Feedback during the challenge is given via an HMI (Human Machine Interface) that is optimally configured in a safe way, taking into account the traffic situation of the moment. After the trip results can directly be shared with other participants via social media like Twitter and Facebook.
----
An architecture has been set up that makes this type of serious gaming possible, making use of in-car data collection equipment from V-tron. V-tron also acts as a co-financing partner in this project.
With a possible target group of 73,600 vehicles that can be reached within the midsize sedan category of business lease cars, it is expected that per year a reduction of 26,495 tons of CO2 emission in total can obtained.
In a subsequent phase of the project, the chosen design will be prototyped and tested in a small-scale experiment.
