A virtual interactive training application to support manual work
bookPart
The demands on professional qualification and training courses have changed in recent years. The trend is toward more flexibility in terms of time, location and content. Workers who solely learn operations or maintenance procedures in different industrial units from text manuals and 2-D graphics may misinterpret instructions and make mistakes in a real work situation. Realistic and visually intuitive representations of complex machinery and technical equipment reduce the risk of misinterpretation. Following the concept of active learning, interactive 3-D training additionally facilitates flexible, time-independent and user-adapted training irrespective of the availability of a machine or piece of technical equipment. An interactive 3-D-training application is utilized to design interactive training lessons in different fields of application, e.g. mechanical and plant engineering, shipbuilding and power engineering. This paper presents the didactic concepts on which it is based, discusses decisions made about the user interface and design and reports on experiences acquired during its industrial use. © 2011 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
