Intravasculaire ultrasone afbeeldingstechniek

article
Interventional catheter based therapeutic techniques have recently become important as they may avoid the necessity of some surgical procedure. Before removing a luminal obstruction, localisation, identification and determination of the dimensions of the obstruction are desirable. A cross sectional image of the anery and the anerial wall can be obtained in-vivo by performing repeatcd pulse echo measurements with a transducer placed in the rotating tip of a catheter. The images obtained by the ultrasonic intra-vascular catheter show good correlations with histological characteristics, and qualitative tissue differentiation is possible. Quantitative tissue identification is hindered by the torsional twisting of the driveshaft in the catheter, the presence of blood and the a-centric position of the catheter in the lumen.
