Sectoral Innovation Performance in the Food and Drinks Sector. Final Report. Task 1
report
Food and drinks manufacturing is a very complex sector with a lot of possibilities for improvement and innovation, but also with a variety of challenges in regard to financial and human resources, fragmented consumer interests and concerns, regulations, costs and a balancing act between novelty and tradition. In contrast to all other products, foods and drinks are ingested by healthy and unhealthy individuals alike - from infant to aged people - which calls for unique requirements for safety and healthiness as well as other dimensions like taste, consistency, olfactory properties and ethical, religious and psychosocial aspects, which are much less relevant for most other consumer products.
The food and drinks manufacturing industry is also deeply embedded into the down- and upstream sectors like agriculture, retail and transport, which are, however, not included in this analysis and NACE category
