Holocene Marine Sedimentation in the North Sea Basin: An Introduction

bookPart
Research on Holocene marine sedimentation in the North Sea basin started early this century. Research activities have increased tremendously during the last decade and we can now assume that the North Sea basin is probably the most measured and surveyed marine basin in the world. Most of these research activities were and still are related to the economic and social importance of the North Sea to the surrounding countries. Among the tremendous amount of gathered data some can be regarded as 'pacemakers in the study of marine tidal basins'. The basis of modern sedimentological research into the marine Holocene of the North Sea are Van Veen's publications (1936, 1938), in which he described the occurrence and distribution of megabedforms on the sea-floor. He related the occurrence and formation of these bedforms to certain hydrodynamic conditions, developing relationships which are still useful today. © 1981 The International Association of Sedimentologists.
