Ship Signature Management System : Functionality

report
A signature of a platform is the manner in which the platform manifests itself to a certain type of sensor and how observable it is when such a sensor is used to detect the platform. Because many military platforms use sensors in different media, it is the total of its different signatures that makes a platform more or less observable to an adversary. There are many military situations in which it is preferable to detect, identify and engage an adversary before he is aware of your presence and identity and before he can engage you. In such situations an awareness of the platform signatures and ways to influence and manage them therefore contributes to the overall war-frghting efficiency of the platform. For operational purposes it is therefore advisable that a crew has at its disposal a tool (a 'signature management system') that advises them on the signatures of the platform and on ways of influencing these same signatures. The system must take into account such things as the mission and tasks of the platform, its area of operations, its adversaries, environmental parameters, and so on. Policing operations against pirates and drug smugglers and operations during which asymmetric attacks by terrorists and insurgents can occur already allow a significant role for signature management. During wartime operations, where means to delay detection and identification and to interfere with engagements literally can decide the difference between life and death, signature management can offer even more benefits
