This publication is a combination of results of TNO projects on crisis communication and self reliance.
What do you do when something happens in your neighbourhood? What if there’s a flood, a riot, an accident? What if the power fails for days, or gas and water are shut off during a harsh winter? And what if there is a fire in your home or office?
Fortunately, these things don’t happen often. Unfortunately, this means that we’re usually not very well prepared for them. It means that the decisions we make in times of crisis usually aren’t thought through rationally, but based on gut feeling and rules of thumb that are different for everyone. For those in
the field of crisis communications, it means that when sending out a message, one should take the reciever’s perspective to increase the likelihood that the content actually comes across. This makes it possible for the receiver to decide to take appropriate actions.
