The influence of resilience resources on long-term adaptation after deployment
conference paper
Psychological resilience is seen as a factor influencing soldiers’ performance, mental health, and long-term adaptation after deployment. Factors related to unit’s morale as evaluated by the Netherlands Morale Instrument were compared to soldiers mental health evaluation six months after return from deployment to Afghanistan. For this study the results of units that were deployed during several task Forces of the NATO mission ISAF in 2009-2010 were used. The effects of internal and external resources under high and low perceived threat conditions during deployment are compared to stress related symptoms and post traumatic growth six months after return from deployment. Analyses of the effects of these internal and external resources indicate differences under high and low perceived threat conditions. The results of this study show the importance of several resilience enhancing factors of the model of psychological resilience for the Netherlands Armed Forces.
