A Dutch protocol for quality control in mammography screening: Dosimetric aspects

article
A quality control programme for dosimetric aspects of mammography screening units is presented which consists of measurements at different phases of operation, i.e. acceptance, constancy and status tests. To investigate the adequacy of quality control procedures absorbed dose measurements were made at a mammography unit using an ionisation chamber and polymethylmethacrylate phantoms of various thicknesses. Major causes of instability of absorbed dose revealed by the quality control programme, were related to tube voltage, compensation of the automatic exposure control unit for radiographs of phantoms of varying thickness and film processing during periods of reduced frequency of operation.
