Plasma assays for derivatives of fibrin and of fibrinogen, based on monoclonal antibodies

article
The presence of a particular fibrinogen derivative in the circulation can be characteristic of a particular ongoing process: soluble fibrin can be used as a marker for activated coagulation, fibrinogen degradation products for fibrinogenolysis, and crosslinked fibrin degradation products for fibrinolysis. Fibrin(ogen) degradation products are usually assessed in serum samples, since the most frequently used assays are based on polyclonal antibodies, which cross-react strongly in fibrinogen. However, serum is a notorious source of artefacts. With the advent of highly specific monoclonal antibodies, assays have been developed which can be carried out on plasma samples, and this makes it possible to avoid the risks inherent in the use of serum. These new plasma assays for fibrinogen derivatives are summarised in this short review.
