The incorporation of time aspects in work sytem design for a more productive and healthy assembly

conference paper
The rhythm in assembly, defined as the repetitive pattern of actions in time, is increasingly recognized as a crucial factor in assembly. Rhythm includes aspects like cycle time, action variation, work content and work rest schemes, and it affects productivity, quality, worker's motivation and worker's health. By the organization of the assembly process, the company management has a lot of influence on the rhythm of their workers. However, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the quantitative effects of rhythm aspects on the production and the workers, to be able to answer the most relevant rhythm questions of companies. To investigate these questions and to implement improvements, a 3-years project is conducted in a large high-volume assembly company.
