Investigation on the performance of a restoration plaster in the field
conference paper
The present paper reports the results of a series of investigalions carried out in a church
located in the region of Zeeland, in the south-west part of the Netherlands. Because of the
sea flooding occurred in 1953, this building shows a serious salt damage, mainly affecting
the restoration plaster applied on the interior walls. This plaster, designed to be used on salt
loaded substrates, started decaying after only a few years from the applicatÍon. The reasons
of the severe damage have been investigated and a combined monitoring of the
environmental conditions and of the damage development has been carried out. The
moisture and salt load, together with the material properties and the environmental
conditions, are shown to play a fundamental role in the damage development.
