Implementing an expert system in the study of sea salt damage

conference paper
MDDS (Masonry Damage Diagnostic System) is an Expert System created in 1996 within a EU program and updated ever
since. MDDS can give assistance in the diagnosis of the damage found in monuments, and serve as an inslrument for
knowledge dissemination, thanks lo íts easily accessible literature background. Using MDDS within a co-operation project
guarantees that all partners operate in a homogeneous and targeled way. MDDS was used within the EU ASSET project
(ASSEssment of suitable Treatments for sea salt decay) to carry oul Case Studies following a given methodologt, and to
develop a Sea Salt Damage Atlas. Aim of this part of the project was to gain a better insight in the sah dnmage mechanisms
and the resulting damage. The System was improyed to better serve the goals of the project and categories of damage were
idenffied in relation to the location of the damage, the source of salt and the source of moisture.
