Performance of restoration plasters in the presence of sea salts: Investigation and monitoring of a case study (Brouwershaven church (The Netherlands))

conference paper
The present paper reports the results of a series of investigations camed out in a church located
in a region of the Netherlands, flooded by the sea about 50 years ago. As many other buildings
in the same area, the church shows a serious damage, mainly affecting the restoration plaster
applied on the interior walls. This plaster, designed to be used on salt loaded substrates, started
decaying after only a few years from the application. The research described here aims to reach
a better understanding of the mechanisms through which damage occurs in order to find out the
reasons of the unsuccessful repairs performed in the past and to propose possible solutions to
stop or slow down the decay process.
