Response of stiffened plate panels to hydrodynamic impact. Theory and experiments
conference paper
The advantage of high tensile strength steels, i.e., a high yield stress, is usually only exploited with respect to static or quasi static loads. An investigation was carried out into a potential benefit of these kind of steels when they are subjected to dy namic loads. The application considered in this investigation are the panels in the wet deck, the bow fore foot an the bow flare area of fast ships. For investigation purposes a drop box was used. This simplified geometry and loading condition is suf ficiently representative for the real life situation. Experiments with this geometry were successfully executed. Relatively sim ple 2D fluid-structure finite element calculations were setup to predict the experimental results. The computational results are in good agreement with the experiments.
