Application of high tensile steel 690 in fast ships

conference paper
An overview is given of the European project ‘FasdHTS’ dealing with the application of high tensile steel in fast-ship structures. The overall objective of the project is to pave the way for the realization of a new generation of fast and large ships with low steel weight and with reduced ship building costs. Due to higher stress levels the assessment with respect to fatigue and ultimate load is unavoidable. It appeared necessary to assess dynamical aspects, due to reduced stiffness in combination with high power propulsion and slamming. The extensive programme of experimental work on fatigue, ultimate load, (low cycle) fatigue of coatings and slamming is outlined An overview is given of solved and unsolved problems with respect of the realisation of high speed ships in high tensile steel with a yield stress of 690 MPa. Some experimental results obtained at TNO are presented as well
