Development and application of a new PV-roof concept for the 5 MW project in the "city of the sun"
conference paper
This paper describes the development of new PV roof that can be produced on a large scale with a high degree of prefabrication. This roof concept should cover the majority of the PV systems to be built on houses for the 5 MW project in the "City of the Sun. To achieve this goal a development team was established in which knowledge from different building en PV-component suppliers was brought together. This approach resulted in a PV roof concept in which the roofing functions are completely separated from the PV system. A second important feature of this roof concept is the use of a universal frame system, which allows assembling a wide range of available PV modules. One of the major challenges was to eliminate the doubts for the building contractor concerning the condensation risk in the roof construction in connection with the so-called "cold roof" principle. Simulations and tests were conducted from which guidelines have derived for the manufacturing and construction process. In addition the use of a universal frame system for mounting the PV modules was considered to be a major innovative step for large scale integration of PV in buildings. The first practical result of the project is the realization of the PV roof concept for 152 houses in Alkmaar. The installed power on the south-faced roofs is 3400 Wp per house. The experience achieved in this project will be of benefit for the next shifts of houses that will be built to complete the 5 MW goal in 2005.
