Costs and benefits of virtual teams
conference paper
Internationalization and globalization are expanding. Many companies work with departments that are remote, or act in networks. Several factors, like unproductive travel time, jet lag, safety, and travel expenses, force to look for alternative for face-to-face meetings. TNO has reviewed the literature on virtual teams from the perspective of human performances. After having identified the major factors that play a role when working virtually, the financial effects seem to be underexposed. Companies often use costs arguments to reduce the number of travels and meetings. Are these considerations pure, and are all relevant factors incorporated? To answer that question a cost benefit method and tool are developed, which contribute to the decision making.
