Costs and benefits of interventions related to key performance indicators

conference paper
An ergonomic intervention is regarded as an investment, which has to be worthwhile and lead to added value for an organisation. In business, key performance indicators (KPIs) are used to measure the extend to which certain economic goals, in terms of added value, are being achieved. These indicators often differ from sector to sector and from business to business and are considered to belong to the field of economics. To overcome the alleged reluctance of implementing ergonomic solutions, it is imperative to approach the particular client's problem from the economics perspective using key performance indicators. Translating cost-effectiveness in terms of these indicators helps on the one hand persuading business to implement ergonomic solutions and on the other ergonomic experts to ‘sell’ their solutions. TNO has developed a tool that fits this idea. The tool consists of seven steps: Analysis and specification of the client’s problem. Estimation of current performance and presentation of sector specific KPIs
Relate causes of underperforming KPIs to the TOP-model of business. Determine the intervention:Choosing the intervention tools. Cost-benefit analysis: Confront the cost-benefit analysis with step 1 This tool may be used manifold: as preparation for a (first) dialogue with a client, during a dialogue to quickly get an overview of sector specific KPIs and economic insight, to quantify and qualify ergonomic interventions.
