De arbeidssituatie van huisartsen-in-opleiding = The work situation of trainee general practitioners
article
Aim: Study of the characteristics of the work situation of trainee general practitioners (GPs) and of the extent to which conditions of work, study and private life contribute to the occurrence of emotional exhaustion and to thoughts of abandoning the training. Method: Secondary analysis of data acquired in a cross-sectional survey. Trainee GPs employed by the SBOH were sent a questionnaire by which they could describe their work situation as of 1 st April 2004. The response rate was 57%. Results: Trainee GPs are relatively satisfied with their work situation; only second-year trainees react less positively to their study and work situation than do those in the first and second years. Feelings of emotional exhaustion occur only slightly throughout the whole training period, in contrast to thoughts of quitting the training. Discussion: Feelings of emotional exhaustion and considering whether to discontinue the training can be largely attributed to a lack of balance between work and private life and to a lack of experienced support from the trainer. Heavy requirements imposed by the tasks involved, too little experience of how to learn and limited assertiveness are also factors that can lead to emotional exhaustion. A strong measure of assertiveness contributes to considering breaking off the training. Conclusions: Trainee GPs have to learn how to balance the demands of work and private life. In addition, the second year of training should be made more attractive.
