For the separation of polyphenyls alumina layers are most efficient. The RF values as well as the qualithy of the separations depend to a great extent on the hydrothermal conditions during drying and processing of the plates. The infuence of the relative humidity and the temperature is elucidated by numerous experimetns. Pre-conditioning at low relative humidities favours the separation of terphenhyls, while preconditioning at higher humidities favours that of the "high boiling" polyphenyls. © 1963.
