Torsional fatigue of fibres
article
An apparatus has been constructed in which 100 fibres can be simultaneously subjected to repeated torsional deformation. As a parameter for representing the fatigue behaviour, the median fatigue life has been chosen. This quantity has been determined at several strain amplitudes for nylon, dacron, orlon, viscose rayon and acetate rayon. The lives of these fibres are compared not only at equal strain amplitude, but also at equal ratio of strain amplitude to ultimate strain, as determined in a single cycle leading to instantaneous failure. The shape of the curves obtained with dacron is discussed; the two parts which the distribution of fatigue life shows, appear to correspond to two different mechanisms of failure. © 1962 Dr. Dietrich Steinkopff-Verlag.
