Small-scale turbulent diffusion in the atmosphere
article
Frenkiel and Katz1 have recently published under this title the results of their experiments with instantaneously created smoke puffs. Starting from Taylor's expression for the variance of the mean concentration in such a puff, assuming R(α), the Lagrangian correlation function, to be near unity for small values of the diffusion time, they have derived an expression for the radius of the outer visible boundary of the smoke puff, a, as a function of the diffusion time, t. They arrived at a nearly linear relationship between a and t for small values of t. This conclusion is fully supported by their experimental results. © 1960 Nature Publishing Group.
