Process-integrated measures to reduce nitrogen emissions

conference paper
Many processes produce gases that contain nitrogen compounds such as NO, NOz, N2O, NH3, HCN and HNCO. These are usually unwanted emissions. Before trying an end-of-pipe solution to reduce these emissions, one may first try to implement process-integrated measures. These measures are usually less expensive to implement and operate. This paper discusses a methodology to design and implement such process integrated measures. The methodology consists of first defining the desired mixture composition that will lead to a minimum of nitrogen emissions and subsequently designing a change in the process that will lead to the desired mixture composition. Two cases are discussed to illustrate this procedure and show the results that can be obtained using this procedure.
