Modelling the dynamic behaviour of a CFB biomass gasifier: a population balance approach

conference paper
Controlling the dynamics of a circulating fluidised bed gasifier is both difficult and important to the application of this technology. In this paper a dynamic model of a circulating fluidised bed gasifier is discussed that is aimed at simulating the dynamic behaviour of the gasifier. The model can simulate the gasifier faster than real-time and can be coupled to similar models of other components surrouding the gasifier Since the dynamics of the gasifier originate mainly in the diversity of the feedstock, the model focuses on a proper description of the population of diverse biomass particles in the fluidised bed. A population balance equation is to obtain the distribution of particles over physical space and property space at every instant. Given this distribution and knowledge of the behaviour of single particles, one may calculate the behaviour of the entire ensemble of particle in the bed. This calculation is supplemented with a mass and energy balance of the fluidised bed and a reaction model for the gasphase reactions.
