Up and down: affective responses to social comparison

doctoral thesis
This thesis focuses on the affective responses to upward and downward social comparison information. The conclusion is that upward comparison has more positive effects than downward comparison. This is specifically true when people are in a stressfull situation, when people feel they can control the situation and when they identify themselves with another person. There is special attention for social comparison after loss of work, comparison among disabled individuals, comparison of performance at work and comparison of academic performance.
