Intelligent food packaging
article
The developments in tag, sensor and 'active' packaging technologies for intelligent functions and identification methods in food packaging, are discussed. Intelligent functions provide data about the authenticity of food products, and determine the quality of food or pharmaceutical product. Conductive polymers are used to create more reliable time-temperature indicators or sensors which determine the freshness of the packed food. Active elements have been developed for fluid/water absorption, and oxygen absorption. Another active elements are able to slow down the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms in the food.
