Detection and visualization to Doppler sensitive sonar pulses

In anti-submarine warfare, the use of Doppler sensitive sonar pulses is common practice. In particular, the wideband Doppler sensitive PTFM pulse (Pulse Train Frequency Modulation) is a powerful tool for detection in reverberation limited conditions. Nevertheless, this pulse is not operationally used by the navies yet, because of the complexity of its processing and the visualization of its output. Indeed, three dimensions need to be displayed on a screen; reflected energy as a function of range, bearing and Doppler. The aim of this study is to find a user friendly way to interpret the range-bearing-Doppler cube by an operator. Advanced post-processing was studied to
help the automated detection process and therefore the display. The results and findings are based on data recorded during sea trials conducted by TNO and the Royal Netherlands Navy.
