Airborne FM-CW SAR and Integrated Navigation System Data Fusion

other
The combination of compact FM-CW radar technology and high resolution SAR pro- cessing techniques should pave the way for the development of a small and cost e®ective imaging radar with high resolution. However, airborne SAR is a very novel application for FM-CW radars. In order to investigate the practicability of FM-CW SAR, an operational airborne demonstrator system has been developed at IRCTR. The integrated navigation system, developed at Delft University of Technology, used for the FM-CW SAR motion compensation is introduced and explained. Motion compensa- tion details, specially the squint angle correction due to the presence of lateral wind and aircraft sideslip angle, are given emphasis in this paper. Results from a °ight campaign, proving the working status of the navigation system and the radar are shown. Flight path
reconstruction, using di®erent con¯gurations of the integrated navigation system, is presented. Improvements in the processed radar data due to squint angle compensation are also presented.
