Breakup of concrete roof slab under internal explosion

conference paper
The Klotz Group, an international working group of experts on explosion safety, has adopted a physical engineering approach in the prediction of debris hazard from internal explosion of a concrete ammunition storehouse. In this engineering approach, the manner the concrete slab fails and breaks-up will have a major influence on the debris mass distribution and flight distance.
To gain an insight on how the concrete breaks-up, a series of one-way spanning clamped concrete slabs exposed to internal blast are tested under varying loading densities. A combination of special powerful X-ray pulsars, high speed video and strain gauges are employed to capture the initial concrete deformation and its subsequent break up process. An overview of the tests, X-ray images of the breakup and a preliminary interpretation of the results are presented in the paper.
