Detonation characteristics of ammonium nitrate products
conference paper
The detonation properties of ammonium nitrate (AN) products depend on many factors and are therefore, despite the large amount of information on this topic, difficult to assess. In order to further improve the understanding of the safety properties of AN, the European Fertilizer Manufacturers Association (EFMA) established in 2005 a research project for safety testing of AN-products, with the objective to validate previous work on large scale detonation testing done at Queens University in Canada during the 1980’s, to validate the parameters used in advanced detonation simulation modelling, and, if appropriate as a consequence of the former objectives, to develop further guidelines for safe storage and separation distances between stacks of AN-products. The study comprised testing at laboratory scale with kg’s of products involved, at medium scale with up to 4 tonnes of product involved, and at full scale with as much as 28 tonnes of products involved. The experiments were performed on fertilizer grade AN, CAN, and AN mixed with gypsum, and on technical grade AN. The project was carried out by the Dutch research institute TNO. This paper presents the results of the study.
