Dynamic Young's modulus determination using single fibre impact

conference paper
From experiments, it is known that the Young’s modulus of synthetic fibres depend on the experimental time scale because of the viscoelastic nature of most fibres. Because these fibres are frequently used in armour applications and are thus subjected to dynamic loading, it is necessary to determine the Young’s modulus under ballistic loads and accompanying high strain rates. In this research, this is achieved by performing single fibre impact experiments with aramid fibre and UHMW-PE fibre. It is seen that the value for the Young’s moduli of both fibres are higher than when they are determined quasi-statically
