Ballistic impact experiments of tungsten carbide projectiles onto tungsten carbide targets
conference paper
The dynamic behaviour of similar grades of 6.5-10.3% Co WC hardmetals has been investigated using high speed photography in the velocity regime 130-500m/s using two different techniques: AP core-core impact and sphere-disc impact tests. Failure has been shown to occur along the Co matrix, with slight evidence of trans-granular fracture at higher impact velocities. Reciprocal impact of similar grades of WC-Co has shown evidence of interface defeat and key features of the failure of WC-Co targets during such impacts have been highlighted.
