Klotz group engineering tool for debris launch prediction

conference paper
The Klotz Group has set up an engineering methodology for debris throw prediction, based on state-of-the-art knowledge. Available information, test data and calculation methods have been evaluated in a consistent way and in combination with physical understanding. Thus, an engineering methodology has been developed which is state-of-the-art. As the tool is build up of semi-empirical modules, the methodology remains a simplified representation of the real debris launch process. The strength of the methodology is the balance between the different modules, and the implementation of physics in a pragmatic way.
The methodology is described in this paper. It focuses on the primary flight path of debris and the initial launch conditions, which are characterized by the launch velocity, the launch angle and the mass distribution.
The KG engineering tool enables the prediction of debris effect distances and can be used to analyse test data in a consistent way.
