Cognitive abilities of functionally illiterate persons relevant to ICT use

conference paper
The present study investigates the proficiency levels of functionally illiterate persons regarding a number of cognitive skills (language processing skills (reading, writing, listening), visual organizational and visual memory skills, mental spatial orientation, speed of cognitive
processing, vigilance, divided attention and perceived self-efficacy), which are necessary when using ICT. The results provide insight into how specific (cognitive) limitations can potentially be relieved by specific user interface elements. The findings will serve as guidelines for the design of a new user interface for an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), which is better adapted to the abilities of illiterates. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
